You Can’t Control the Line. You Can Control Everything Else.
Control What You Can Control
There’s a lesson I learned early on a football field that never left me.
As a D1 football player, our coach said it constantly before games, before practice, before every single rep: “Control what you can control.” Not the weather. Not the refs. Not the other team. But your preparation? Your effort? The time you put in? That’s yours. Lock in on those things, and watch what happens.
That lesson didn’t stay on the field. It followed me everywhere.
You can’t control how long the airport line is. You can’t control whether your flight gets delayed, whether it rains on your big day, or whether someone cuts you off on the highway. But you can control how you respond. Your attitude. Your patience. What you do next.
That’s where your real power is.
Three ways to stay grounded when life feels out of your hands:
1. Put everything into your preparation.
Stop stressing about the outcome and pour that energy into the process. The people who win aren’t always the most talented, they’re usually just the most prepared.
2. Learn to pause before you react.
One breath before you respond to a frustrating moment changes everything. That pause is yours. Use it.
3. Focus on actions, not results.
You can’t always control what happens, but you can control what you do about it. Show up. Do the work. Stay consistent.
Life is going to throw things at you that you didn’t ask for and didn’t deserve. That’s just how it goes. But the people who come out on top aren’t the ones who avoided hard situations, they’re the ones who stopped fighting what they couldn’t change and started owning what they could.
Control what you can control. Everything else will fall into place.
