why things are changing (and how to stay cool)
Hey team,
We all know that feeling when things at work or school suddenly flip upside down. Maybe it is a new boss, a new way of doing your job, or even just moving your desk. It feels bumpy because our brains actually like knowing what comes next.
When a big change happens, it is okay to feel a little bit stressed or annoyed. That is just your brain trying to catch up. But instead of just waiting for the dust to settle, here are three simple ways to handle it like a pro.
3 ways to make change easier
Find your anchors
When everything feels new, look for the things that are staying exactly the same. Maybe you still have the same work bestie, the same lunch spot, or the same morning coffee. Remind yourself of those things. It helps you feel steady when the world feels like it is spinning.
Ask the big why
It is hard to get on board with a new rule if you don't know why it exists. If you are confused, just ask. Once you understand that a change is happening to make things faster or better for everyone, it is a lot easier to stop fighting it and start helping.
Be a beginner
Nobody is an expert on day one. Give yourself a messy week where it is okay to make mistakes while you learn the new way of doing things. If you treat it like a game or an experiment instead of a test, you will stop worrying about being perfect.
A quick note for the bosses
If you are the one in charge, remember that people need to hear the plan more than once. Even if you feel like a broken record, keep talking. It helps everyone feel safe.
Change is just a bridge to something new. Take it one step at a time and you will get to the other side just fine.
See you out there,
Aaron
P.S. Lately I’ve been asked when I will be in certain cities as it may make it easier for some of you to have me come speak, do a workshop, or in person coaching. So I’m going to start sending out dates at the bottom of some newsletters that I have open in certain cities.
Right now here are a few:
April 7th–9th: Los Angeles, CA
April 14th–15th: Chicago, IL
April 17th: Washington, D.C.
April 21st & 22nd: Toronto
April 23rd & 27th: Boston, MA
