Why Most People Fail Their Goals (and How You Can Succeed)
Being legally blind, I’ve always had to think differently about my goals. In football, in school, and in business, thinking differently is what allows me to succeed.
Most people struggle to achieve their goals due to a lack of clarity, planning, and accountability.
Vague goals like “I want to be healthier” or “I want to make more money” are not enough. To succeed, set SMART goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.
Understanding the deeper motivation behind your goals is crucial. Ask yourself why the goal is important and visualize success to find your motivation. If it’s because someone else thinks you should do something, then you probably won’t achieve it. If it’s because you want to for yourself, then your chances go way up.
Many people set goals but don’t develop a clear plan. Create a daily and weekly plan and stick to it.
People often abandon their goals when they don’t see immediate results. Understand the plateau effect, and celebrate small wins.
Without accountability, it’s easy to make excuses and procrastinate. Find an accountability partner, and be public about your goals. The more people know, the more likely you’ll stick to them.
Most people give up after the first or second attempt, some the third—but barely anyone is willing to fail 100 times.
In high school I cold called every college coach in the nation looking for one to give me a shot. I didn’t care if all the others told me no.
If I told you that on the 101st try you would accomplish your goal, you’d be excited for every no you got. This is the mentality you need to have.
Every time you fail you have an opportunity to learn, grow, and get better.
