Leadership Isn’t About You—Here’s What It’s Really About
People often confuse leadership with authority. They assume it means being the boss, calling the shots, or having the final word.
But the best leaders I’ve met do something different they take the spotlight off themselves and put it on their team.
Real leadership isn’t about being in control.
It’s about creating conditions where other people can thrive.
That means building trust, giving honest feedback, and making sure your actions match your words. And most importantly, it means knowing when to speak and when to listen.
I’ve worked with people in leadership positions who thought their job was to be the smartest in the room.
But leadership isn’t about being the smartest. It’s about unlocking the brilliance of everyone around you.
It’s about setting a vision and then trusting others to help shape how you get there.
One of the most impactful lessons I’ve learned is that leadership has very little to do with ego.
In fact, the more your leadership is driven by ego, the less effective it becomes.
People don’t follow titles. They follow trust. They follow consistency. They follow humility.
So here’s a quick check-in if you’re leading a team:
Are you doing it to prove something or to build something?
Are you making decisions that are best for the group or best for how you’ll be perceived?
True leaders serve. They show up. They stay grounded.
And when it gets hard, they carry weight not pass it off.
Because leadership isn’t about you. It’s about who you help others become.
