Leadership Isn’t About Being Right

Too many leaders think their job is to be the smartest person in the room.

To have the answer to every question. To make the final call every time.

That’s not leadership. That’s ego.

The strongest leaders I’ve worked with understand their role is not to be right. It’s to get it right.

There’s a huge difference.

When you make leadership about being right, you shut people down.

You stop listening. You turn meetings into monologues.

And even if you’re brilliant, you limit your team to one brain instead of ten.

When you make leadership about getting it right, you open doors.

You ask better questions. You admit what you don’t know. You invite people to poke holes in your thinking.

And the outcome is always stronger because the team owns it.

Think about the best leader you’ve worked with.

Odds are, they weren’t perfect. But they made you feel trusted.

They valued your perspective.

And because of that, you leaned in. You worked harder. You spoke up with ideas you’d normally keep to yourself.

That’s what real leadership does, it unlocks the best in people, not just the leader.

Here’s something you can try this week:

In your next meeting, ask your team, “What am I missing?”

Then stop talking. Listen. You might be surprised what comes up.

Leadership isn’t about always being right. It’s about creating the space where the right answers can show up.

If you’re working through leadership challenges and want someone in your corner, let’s explore coaching.
