Gratitude Is a Performance Tool
Most people think gratitude is soft. Nice to have. Optional.
I think it’s one of the strongest performance tools you can use as a leader.
Gratitude does two things at once:
1. It reinforces the behavior you want to see again.
2. It strengthens relationships so people are willing to go the extra mile.
Think back to the best boss or coach you ever had.
Odds are, you felt valued. Seen. Appreciated.
And because of that, you didn’t just do the minimum, you gave more.
That’s the power of gratitude.
It doesn’t just feel good. It drives retention, motivation, and performance.
And here’s the thing: it doesn’t cost you anything.
You don’t need a budget line for gratitude. You just need awareness.
Here’s a challenge for you:
Pick three people you interact with this week.
Send each one a note of specific gratitude. Not “Thanks for all you do.”
Instead: “The way you handled that tough client call made a difference.”
Or, “I know you stayed late last week, it mattered.”
Small, specific gratitude has a ripple effect.
People feel it. They remember it. And they repeat the behavior.
Gratitude isn’t soft.
It’s one of the hardest-hitting tools you have to drive performance.
If you’d like me to share this perspective with your team through a keynote on gratitude-based leadership, let’s connect.
